90 days to beat the curse of Walsall

If you’ve got a new car you’d do well to steer clear of … Walsall.

That’s because the West Midlands town has been named Britain’s unluckiest town for new owners , be it brand new or second hand.

In Walsall an incredible 10% of ‘non-fault’ car accidents happen within 90 days of innocent owners getting their new car.

That’s the result of a huge study of 68,000 accidents by insurers AX.

The firm’s study compared the time an owner had first registered their car to the moment they were involved in an accident that was not their fault.

In Walsall nearly two in five (39%) of motorists unlucky to be hit by another vehicle have owned their car for less than a year, and 11% of victims have owned their car for less than 90 days.

In their second month of ownership motorists are still 50% more likely to suffer an incident than in the 12th.

From car park prangs to roundabout bumps it’s Walsall that leads the way, followed by Preston and Stockport.

Britain’s second city, Birmingham, is in 12th place and Manchester is 10th.

Although London features by far the highest number of accidents within the first 90 days of ownership, it doesn’t make the top 20 unluckiest towns and cities because of its proportionately high vehicle population.

AX Director of Sales & Operations, Scott Hamilton-Cooper, above, said: “However big or small, damage to your car when it’s not your fault is upsetting.

“When you’ve only owned that vehicle for weeks or months, it’s painful, frustrating and much, much more.

“There’s no rhyme nor reason for so many new owners to be on the wrong end of a bump.

“You can’t even suggest it’s down to familiarity of the vehicle as victims are the innocent party. It is purely just a question of bad luck.”

AX is partner to more than 1,500 franchised dealers across the UK, including major groups like Inchcape and Jardine Motors, as well as several insurers and fleets.
